“We Fight For Bubba” is an event that honors a great Woman by raising money for families and children in need.
On April 23, 2014, our mother, Lois Jean Weiss, passed away suddenly after a brief battle with breast cancer. “Bubba” was the name given to our mother by her 22 grandchildren. To her eleven children, she was simply known as “Mom”. “Bubba” was a selfless person who raised her family with one goal in mind: “Love each other”. To us she was peacemaker, a friend and a confidant who, against, all odds raised a family of eleven children who are not only brothers and sisters but “friends.” Mom raised us to know that, despite your differences, you have one family, and that family should be treasured above all else.
Her first grandchild was born in 1998, and from that moment on, she was “all in”. Nothing would keep her away from spending time with her grandkids. She loved them dearly, and they loved her in a way that reflected her kind heart. She was their “Bubba”, and they miss her greatly.
When “Bubba” passed away, the initial emotions of fear, anger, and sadness were exactly what we knew she would not want us to feel. Within a few weeks, our sister, Kim, came up with the idea of hosting an annual running event which allows us to honor “Bubba’s” legacy by helping families and children who are dealing with unforeseen events or illnesses. The event provides assistance directly to the family, not to an organization or charity. Each year our family selects a family who will receive all of the entire proceeds from the event. The family that we choose as the beneficiary is one that we know our Mother would have taken the time to know and love. She loved children and her heart ached when she heard of a child or a family that was suffering with an illness or tragedy. If Mom learned of a young child with an illness she would often make a point of reaching out to that family to offer encouragement and love. It is our goal to continue that tradition of selflessness and love in a way that honors our Mother, our friend and our “Bubba”.
